“How does the guy who drives the snowplow get to work in the mornings?”

How does the guy who drives the snowplow get to work in the mornings? In a 1964 television commercial and in print ads through the 1980s, the answer was that the snowplow driver drives a Volkswagen to get to work. “It’s like asking how does the man who drives the snowplow get to the snowplow, but who wakes up the man who wakes other people up?” was printed in the St. Louis (MO) Post-Dispatch on March 5, 1967.

“How guy who drives the snowplow get to work in the morning?” became a popular internet meme in 1994.

Nice problem: when the driver of a snowplow drives to work, what kind of car does he need? Indeed, a volkswagen beetle. What else!

Snow Plow
(Television ad is shown.—ed.)
But it wasn’t just in print that VW excelled. The manufacturer is also famous for its TV ads, like this one from 1964. The ad’s premise “Have you ever wondered how the snow plow driver drives to the snow plow?” is brilliant in its simplicity. And the punchline is just as good: “This one drives a Volkswagen.” It took everything that was great about VW’s print ads and applied it to TV.
